Times of Prayer November 12, 2009

Prayer in the life of a believer is vital for our ongoing personal relationship with God. When we go without praying we feel disconnected, out of the loop, frustrated, weak, and many others feelings.
I remember a few words to a song from when I was in college and it went like this, “Six days without prayer makes one weak!” That is so true. If you have ever gone a day, or two without a sincere prayer time you understand what I am saying here. This week I have not had the closeness of prayer times as I would have liked, and I know it throughout many areas of my life, how I act, react, motivation, having a clear mind to think, etc.
Jesus though has given you and I a wonderful model of spending time in prayer to God. Jesus would pray in the good times, in the times of trial, he prayed for others, as well as himself, through His prayers he also prayed for God’s will and submitted Himself to God.
Mark 14:32-42 (New International Version)
Gethsemane
32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34“My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” 35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” 39Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. 41Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Christ submitted himself to God, will you take the time today to submit yourself to God through times of prayer and intercession that His will be done within your life. Today I too have submitted myself to pray to the Lord. Whether it be morning, noon, or evening, they are all good times to pray!
Pastor,
Just a few words from Friday and Saturday’s reading in scripture.
Mark 16:17-18 – - “And these signs shall follow those who believe…cast out demons…speak with new tongues….serpents…drink…..they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover.” The last line in those two verses haunts me and many others…..Jesus didn’t say that some of those you lay hands on will be healed……he said they will recover……the fault has to be in us, not in God.
Luke 1:11 and 20 – - evidently, Zacharias had enough evidence that who he saw was an angel, because God would have not punished him for unbelief otherwise. In verses 26-38, Gabriel was sent to Mary, and she was “troubled” in her heart. Evidently, she had some doubts about the words she had heard, but didn’t express them with her lips.
Luke 4:24-30 — Jesus was not politically correct in his words to the Jews….the truth hurt them, so they tried to kill him. We should take this example, and not try to be politically correct, but instead, speak the truth always.
